“Can Do” Kate Gosselin

Anyone watch Jon and Kate Plus 8? I didn’t until recently. Once the news of their divorce broke and since I 
write about divorce issues for Divorce Support at About.com it is now necessary for me to keep up with the Gosselins.
TLC has decided to put a new spin on Kate’s character. I say character because no way is the life she lives representative of “real” life. Anyway, she is now “Can Do” Kate. The single mom who can do whatever needs to be done for the sake of her children…or maybe I should say, for her own sake.
Honestly, if you’ve ever watched this show you have to be aware of the fact that Kate’s main motivation in life is taking care of Kate. Her selfishness is not the least bit virtuous!
Kate has decided to remodel the kitchen. A kitchen in a 1.3 million dollar home her and Jon recently purchased. “Can Do” Kate couldn’t take the stress of the remodel though and took off for a two week vacation at the beach with the kids.
I imagine her nanny and various staff accompanied her also. After all, what would a single mother do without the nanny and staff to make sure we are able to do it all?
When the news of their divorce broke and I realized it would be played out for millions of viewers to witness, I thought it would be a positive thing. An opportunity for those not touched by divorce to get a glimpse of what divorce is like. Especially what life is like for single mothers raising children. Was I ever wrong!
Sure, there are women like Kate in the world. Single mothers with high incomes and the ability to take advantage of the luxuries those incomes afford them. On average though, a single mother doesn’t take two week vacations to the beach. They don’t remodel kitchens in the homes because they are struggling to pay the mortgage. They are busy living real lives with real problems and you know what? Unlike Kate Gosselin they are managing to deal with the stress of every day life.
Of course, a reality show about the day-to-day life of your average single mother wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining as the life of tummy tucked Kate. I know mine wouldn’t. Who the hell wants to watch a woman work, clean house, care for the dogs and hopefully manage to get out to a movie or dinner a couple of times a month?
I may not deal with the stresses Kate does, may not live a life that represents “reality” according to TLC but I’m damned sure a “Can Do” woman and just like most single mothers I know, I’ve got Kate Gosselin beat hands down.
Now, I’m off…I’ve got work to do, toilets to scrub and a kitchen to clean. One that isn’t perfect but one I’m damned glad to be able to call my own. And if there is anyone out there willing to fork over the money needed for a remodel I’ll be more than happy to wash dishes in the tub.

You totally rock. No single mom I know looks like this picture. A recently separated mom cries a lot. Has no idea what she is wearing at times, is worried about the future of her +<her children and why her marriage didn't work out. She wants to stay home and scrub sink – not go to beach and romp. I know I did. Her face is puffy from crying and not sleeping enough.
And certainly a remodel isn't what my therapist recommended. I asked to move a chair and she was hesitant.
Hollywood, even in Pennsylvania, isn't real.
I loved reading this article. I’ve never watched the kate john and goshlin show or whatever you call it but I’ve seen the headlines on people magazine and read a few articles here and there. She’s a single mom living it up and that can only be done in Hollywood, pennsylvania
